Per Svedensten, Head of NMS Sweden R&D Center, shared insights into the development direction of next-generation cone crushers. He noted that crushing and grinding typically account for 30%–50% of total power consumption at a mining plant, with grinding being the major energy consumer. Therefore, when designing crushing equipment, it is important to balance throughput and reduction ratio, with priority given to increasing the reduction ratio rather than simply pursuing higher throughput. This can reduce secondary crushing, increase capacity, produce finer material, and shift part of the crushing load away from mills, which operate at lower energy efficiency, thereby reducing the overall energy consumption of the circuit. NMS is currently advancing its R&D through modeling and simulation, covering physical analysis of individual crushing chambers, advanced fatigue calculations, modeling of crushing chamber geometry and motion characteristics, Discrete Element Method (DEM) simulation, and simulation of the complete crushing circuit process. The next-generation crusher automation control system features two key functions: maximizing equipment performance and providing overload protection. It is also equipped with a high-performance human-machine interface and digital twin technology. Going forward, NMS will develop new crushing chamber configurations and crushers with higher reduction ratios, further reducing the energy consumption of complete crushing and grinding circuits.

NMS GVTM Vertical Stirred Mill

Wang Chongxiang, Head of NMS Shanghai R&D Center, introduced the GVTM Vertical Stirred Mill. Designed for fine and ultra-fine grinding applications, the product is suitable for metal mining, non-metallic mining, metallurgy, chemical processing and other industries. Compared with conventional fine grinding processes, the system can reduce energy consumption by 45% and footprint by at least 75%, delivering significant energy savings and a compact design for fine grinding applications. For ultra-fine grinding, with a feed size of 150 μm, the product can achieve a final particle size of 20 μm, with a uniform particle size distribution that effectively reduces overgrinding. Key components and operating parameters can be customized to meet customer requirements. Intelligent feed adjustment, automatic grinding media replenishment and a chamber cleaning system reduce manual intervention and improve operational stability. The automatic discharge outlet and automatic maintenance door opening and closing functions simplify maintenance, effectively reducing downtime for servicing and lowering operating and maintenance costs in the grinding process. In addition, the GVTM Vertical Stirred Mill uses mathematical modeling, simulation and laboratory testing to optimize equipment performance. Supported by AI algorithms and cloud-based technologies, it enables real-time intelligent and automated adjustment of operating parameters.

NMS HGR High-Pressure Grinding Roll

Xiao Fangping, Product Manager at NMS Technology & Equipment Research Institute, introduced the HGR High-Pressure Grinding Roll and MES Series Box-Type Elliptical Screen. As a new-generation high-efficiency ultra-fine crushing solution, the HGR adopts a single-motor synchronous drive system that drives the movable and fixed rolls to rotate synchronously in opposite directions. Material continuously enters the gap between the two rolls from the feed hopper, while the hydraulic system applies pressure to the movable roll. Under high pressure, the particles are crushed against each other and form a compacted cake, which is discharged from the bottom of the machine. Compared with conventional dual-motor drive systems, the HGR saves 15%–20% in power consumption. The movable and fixed rolls are forcibly maintained in parallel, reducing edge material leakage and edge effects, lowering circulating loads and increasing throughput by up to 15%. The studs form an autogenous material layer on the roll surface, extending roll surface service life to more than 20,000 hours, while the bearings are designed for a service life of more than eight years. Its four core technologies—synchronized and stable operation, uniform force distribution, optimized wear resistance, and easy maintenance—create a highly efficient and stable operating system, setting a new benchmark for high-efficiency ultra-fine crushing.

NMS MES Series Box-Type Elliptical Screen

The MES Series Box-Type Elliptical Screen is designed for high-capacity, high-efficiency screening applications and is suitable for metal mining, non-metallic mining, metallurgy, coal and other industries. The motor drive is transmitted through three sets of gears in the gearbox to achieve forced synchronization, and then transferred via universal joints to a three-shaft box-type exciter. The two side shafts and the center shaft of the three-shaft box-type exciter operate with a phase difference and in opposite directions. Their excitation forces combine and cancel each other to generate a 3:1 elliptical motion trajectory. Compared with conventional banana screens, the MES Series increases screening capacity by more than 20%, with vibration intensity exceeding 6G. Its elliptical motion combines the characteristics of circular and linear motion, enabling high material conveying speed and effective screening. The optimum screen deck inclination is determined through DEM simulation, while the use of the equal-thickness screening principle helps prevent blinding and improves screening efficiency. Each shaft of the three-shaft box-type elliptical exciter is housed in an independent chamber with independent lubrication, with no gears inside, reducing potential failure points and simplifying maintenance.

Intelligent O&M Empowers a New Management Model

On the morning of September 11, NMS held its Intelligent O&M Services presentation. Gong Lu, Deputy General Manager of NMS Marketing Center, said in his address that the mining industry is undergoing a profound transformation toward intelligent, green and efficient operations. Traditional experience-based and reactive maintenance models are increasingly unable to meet the needs of modern mines. He noted that intelligent O&M has become a critical support for stable production, reliable supply, cost reduction and efficiency improvement, as well as an important pillar in NMS’s transformation from an equipment manufacturing service provider into a full life-cycle value partner for mining companies.

Meng Zhi, Director of Intelligent O&M at NMS, then systematically introduced NMS’s intelligent O&M solution, starting with the challenges of traditional maintenance models. He pointed out that under traditional O&M models, pressure on cost, efficiency and safety continues to accumulate. Massive losses caused by downtime, heavy spare parts inventory, uncontrollable emergency repair costs and an inefficient O&M cost structure have become four major profit drains. Low overall equipment efficiency, combined with both over-maintenance and under-maintenance, frequently disrupts production. Meanwhile, heavy reliance on manual inspections creates safety risks for personnel and equipment when unexpected failures occur, while potential hazards can be difficult to identify in time. These long-standing challenges continue to affect mining companies and call for a systematic, data-driven intelligent O&M solution.

Meng Zhi, Director of Intelligent O&M at NMS, introduces NMS’s intelligent O&M solution

To address these challenges, NMS’s intelligent O&M solution centers on real-time condition monitoring and predictive maintenance. Through data-driven intelligent diagnostics, it enables a shift from “reactive maintenance” to “proactive management.” The solution can reduce unplanned downtime and performance degradation of critical equipment, increasing equipment OEE from the industry average of 65%–70% to more than 80%. By developing precise maintenance strategies based on actual equipment conditions, total maintenance costs are expected to decrease by more than 25%. By forecasting spare parts demand based on equipment health conditions and failure trends, the target is to increase spare parts inventory turnover by more than 50%. At the same time, potential risks can be identified in advance, strengthening personnel and equipment safety and delivering comprehensive value improvements to mineral processing operations. “Make equipment conditions visible, make failure risks predictable, and make maintenance decisions data-driven.” Meng Zhi said that NMS’s intelligent O&M solution uses data as the foundation to build a closed-loop intelligent O&M system covering the entire equipment life cycle. It is not merely a technical tool, but a transformation of equipment management and production organization models, creating a new path for mining companies to improve quality and efficiency, reduce energy consumption and cut carbon emissions.

From its full industry chain business layout and the launch of three new products to its next-generation cone crusher R&D roadmap and intelligent O&M solutions, NMS systematically demonstrated its technological expertise and innovation capabilities in mineral processing at this year’s conference. Looking ahead, NMS will continue to increase global R&D investment, strengthen its core products, enhance its aftermarket services both in China and overseas, and steadily advance its business transformation and upgrading. NMS will also deepen exchanges and practical cooperation with industry partners to jointly create a new future of high-quality development for the global mining industry.
